Situation and urban planning

The building structure of the Filmhaus will be reduced back to the extent necessary for the programming and all technical superstructures removed. In urban planning terms, this will create a new ensemble of buildings with a building aligned centrally to the Appellhofplatz, which in a height of 5 storeys is the central link between the WDR buildings on the site. We call it the WDR Open House, as it offers insight in the city into the cross-media work of WDR. The bar-shaped section of the building of 10 storeys and the archive building, which is now visible from the Appellhofplatz, complete the ensemble and are enclosed by WDR Open House.

The share of space situated above the high-rise limit will be reduced by approx. 2,000 m² GFA. The largely demolished old studio building will be redefined by three high storeys and merged with the adjoining section to the Open House. Levels pushed in, which under planning law are regarded as galleries, connect all existing floors.

The archive building is generously connected with the Filmhaus at all levels of the Open House, so 60% of all usable space in the Filmhaus can be interconnected directly with the archive building. For urban planning reasons, we recommend keeping the high-rise building of the Filmhaus that has been reduced in terms of space (5th – 9th floor) separate from the archive building. Technically and functionally, however, the possibility to connect them is still accounted for.
