Architectural signal on the plant premises
Nestlé AG’s Hamburg site is steeped in tradition. The oldest buildings, such as to-day's works reception, date from the 1930ies. Continuous extension to the works over the years have led to a great expansion and subsequent densification with a variety of different building structures. The new building lies on one of the major transport axes in the works that is used in particular by visitors. Brick-built buildings are dominant here.
The new process building will be used for the preparation for production of “Smart-ies” and is an extension to the existing production hall from the 1960ies. The pro-cess steps inside the building take place on two levels. Windows are primarily re-quired for service and maintenance work on the largely autonomous production facil-ities. A new break room for the existing production is also part of the room pro-gramme and offers a view of a crossroads of the major roads in the building’s sur-roundings.
Architectural bearing for a process building
The design of the façades along with the choice of suitable materials is always one of the main occupations when it comes to proportioning the areas and creating a relief that supports the chosen façade segmentation. In this case, the ground floor base picks up on the historic brickwork construction in the works. Projecting brick layers create a striking façade relief. The sandwich façade with a corrugated profile facing above this towers over the existing building in the same colour spectrum. A partial area has been designed in an aluminium colour as a transition to the adjacent technical buildings and silos. Ribbon windows have been created using system win-dows in the sandwich façade that give the façade more profile and a rhythmic ap-pearance with their frame profiles. The proportion of the materials in the façade, which alternate vertically between bricks, glass and corrugated sheet, rises from the base to the parapet wall with ratio values of 1/1.5 and 1/2 from 1 m to 3 m. The ob-jective of this proportioning is to emphasise the building’s height and dominance of this small industrial building.
